Gathering around warm neutrals

There’s a quiet joy in setting a table that feels both effortless and intentional - a multi-generational space that welcomes laughter, lingering conversations and the kind of times that become core memories.

For this instalment of Real Homes, we step into the home of Jas and her family to explore exactly this: how to craft a table that feels warm, unhurried and deeply personal using Rommer’s neutral dinnerware collection.

From her signature styling approach, rooted in texture, nature and thoughtful layering, Jas walks us through how neutrals become the perfect foundation for tables that feel grounded and alive.

Why Warm Neutrals Matter

Neutral tones do more than complement: they anchor. crème, oat and mocha bring a sense of calm to the table, quietly setting the mood without asking for attention. Whether you’re planning a mid week family dinner or weekend brunch, these warm hues create a base that feels at once welcoming and refined.

A neutral foundation lets the story of the moment shine through, whether it’s herbs from the garden, hand-thrown ceramics, or napkins with a whisper of colour.

Jas brings an intuitive and natural sensibility to styling. Spaces that breathe, details that feel collected not curated. We asked her to speak specifically about using neutral dinnerware as a styling tool, and how those subtle shades shape the mood of a gathering.

What draws you to warm, neutral tones when styling a table?
I’m really drawn to warm neutrals because they feel calm, timeless & easy. They create a soft backdrop that doesn’t compete for attention, which is perfect for everyday family meals. It sets a relaxed tone while still feeling considered and beautiful.

How do you start when you’re setting a table from scratch? Where does your eye go first?
I usually begin with the plates; they anchor each setting and set the tone for everything else. From there, I build outward with simple layers like linens and glassware, keeping everything cohesive but not too structured.

Which textures or natural elements do you love pairing with neutral dinnerware, and why?
I love bringing in natural textures like linen, wood, and ceramics. They add warmth and depth without overpowering the palette. Simple elements like greenery or seasonal fruit also help the table feel more relaxed and lived-in.

Do you have a favourite styling trick that always elevates the table?
Layering is always my go-to. Even subtle differences in tone or texture, like a soft linen napkin or mixing matte and gloss finishes can add interest without feeling overdone. I also like to keep centrepieces simple and low so the table still feels open and inviting.

How do you balance simplicity and intention, especially with a neutral palette?
It’s about being selective. With a neutral palette, each piece stands out more, so I focus on a few elements that work well together rather than adding too much. Leaving a bit of space helps everything feel more intentional and calm.

How do you approach styling a table for the whole family, balancing practical and beautiful with little ones?
I always start with practicality; durable pieces, easy-to-clean materials, and a layout that works for everyone. From there, I’ll add a few thoughtful touches to make it feel special, while keeping everything simple and accessible so it still feels easy to use.

For someone starting their collection, what pieces would you prioritise?
I’d begin with versatile, everyday essentials plates, cups, and cutlery in a neutral palette that can work across different settings. Then layer in pieces like linens or serving ware over time to build a collection that feels personal and adaptable.

Styling Tips from Jas - The Key Ingredients

  1. Start with your staples

When setting a table, begin with the pieces you use every day. Plates anchor each place setting and help establish the overall feel of the table, making it easier to build around them with linens, glassware and serving pieces.

  1. Layer texture, not clutter

Warm neutrals come to life through texture. Linen, wood and ceramics add depth and interest while keeping the table feeling calm and cohesive. A few considered layers often have more impact than adding more colour.

  1. Bring the outside in

Simple natural elements such as greenery, seasonal fruit or freshly cut branches add warmth and softness to the table. They help a setting feel relaxed, lived-in and connected to the season.

  1. Keep it practical

A beautiful table should still work for everyday family life. Choose durable pieces, keep centrepieces low and leave space for shared dishes and conversation. The most inviting tables are often the simplest ones.

Your Table, Your Story

Styled tables reflect the stories we want to share: gentle, grounded, and unhurried. In working with neutrals, we find a foundation that feels warm on its own and even more beautiful when layered with meaningful accents.

An intentional space made to welcome, to linger, to connect.
